Over the years, I have worked with many small business owners who were not struggling because they lacked ideas.

They were struggling because they were stuck.

They were thinking.

Analyzing.

Researching.

Planning.

And delaying action while waiting for certainty.

I understand the temptation.

Business decisions can feel significant.

The larger your business becomes, the greater the consequences often appear.

But there is a point where thoughtful planning becomes overthinking.

And overthinking can quietly limit growth.

Researchers John-Erik Mathisen and Jan Ketil Arnulf explored different decision-making mindsets and discovered something interesting.

Their research identified two broad approaches:

  • An elaborative mindset, focused on gathering information, analyzing situations, and exploring possibilities.

  • An implemental mindset, focused on acting on available information and moving forward.

Both approaches have value.

The problem arises when business owners become trapped in analysis.

Mathisen and Arnulf described this as the "cost of doubt."

The more we seek perfect information, the more uncertainty we often uncover.

And the more uncertainty we uncover, the harder it becomes to act.

Why This Matters for Growth-Stage Businesses

As businesses grow, decisions become more complex.

Questions emerge such as:

  • Should we hire now or wait?

  • Is it time to invest in new systems?

  • Should we expand our services?

  • Are we targeting the right customers?

  • Do we need to change our strategy?

These are important questions.

They deserve thoughtful consideration.

But many business owners become trapped searching for certainty that does not exist.

And while they are searching, opportunities pass.

Growth slows.

Momentum fades.

The Leadership Challenge Behind Overthinking

I do not believe most business owners struggle because they are poor decision-makers.

In fact, the opposite is often true.

Many thoughtful leaders care deeply about making the right choice.

The challenge is that growth-stage leadership rarely offers perfect information.

You often need to make decisions with incomplete data.

You need to act before certainty arrives.

You need to learn while moving.

That can feel uncomfortable.

But it is often where growth happens.

Thinking Matters. Action Matters Too.

I am not arguing against planning.

I am not arguing against research.

And I am certainly not suggesting that business owners should make reckless decisions.

Thoughtful leadership requires careful thinking.

But sustainable growth also requires action.

At some point, analysis must give way to implementation.

The goal is not to stop thinking.

The goal is to think clearly enough to move.
